The numbers you type into the calculator stay in your browser. This page describes what does reach this site's server, starting with the distinction the rest of it rests on.
In your browser, or on this site's server
A thing you type here can end up in one of two places, and the difference between them is the whole of this page.
In your browser. Your guess, your yearly spending and your retirement age, and if you give them, your age and your balance, are held by the page in your browser and used there. They are not saved anywhere, not even in your browser's own storage: close the tab and they are gone. They are never sent to this site's server, so the people who run this site cannot see them. The whole calculation runs on the page, which is why it keeps working with the network off once it has loaded.
On this site's server. What the server keeps, in a database the people who run this site can read, is that the page was used and how: the steps you reached, what came on screen, what you opened or pressed, and how long you stayed. A few of those are coarse summaries worked out from your numbers, too rough to be turned back into them. No raw number you type is ever sent. An email address is kept only if you choose to leave one.
The email you leave
The calculator has no sign-up and no account. Some of its assumption cards describe a thing that is not built yet, and its questions ask whether you would like one; each offers to email you when the thing has been built. If you leave an address there, what the server keeps is the address, the site it was left on, what it was left for, and when. It is used to email you from this site, starting with a note when the thing you asked about has been built. It is not sold, not shared, and not added to any other list. To have it removed, write to info@howmuchtoretire.com from the address you left, and it will be deleted.
The view counter
Each page load is counted once. The counter's only identifier is a random id created for the tab you are in. It lives in the tab, not in a cookie, and it is gone when the tab closes; it cannot follow you between visits.
If you arrive from an ad or from a link with campaign tags in the address, those tags and the referring site's domain are stored with the count. The full address of the page you came from is never stored.
What this site does not do
No third-party trackers, no analytics services, no ad pixels. The page's security policy stops the browser from sending anything to any other site, so that is enforced, not just promised.
If this changes
If this site starts recording a kind of information not described here, this page is updated in the same change that does it.
