This site gathers data from your visit in three ways, each in its own section below. This data shows how people use the site and helps the developer improve it for others. The data is not sold, not used to advertise to you, and not shared with others with the intent of advertising to you.
No third-party trackers, analytics services or ad pixels run on this site, and its security policy stops your browser from sending anything to any other site.
Page views
Each time a page loads, it is counted once. Each count is stored with:
- a random id made for the browser tab you are in, which lives in that tab (not in a cookie) and is gone when the tab closes
- how the page was loaded: opened, reloaded, reached with the back or forward button, or restored by the browser, and whether it loaded out of sight
- how many visits you have made and how many days since the first, which your browser keeps count of so that a return can be told from a first visit
- which version of the page you were shown. Your browser keeps this too, as a single word that is the same for everyone shown that version, so the page looks the same when you come back
- the width and height of your browser window, and whether you use a touch screen or a mouse
- if you arrived from an ad or from a link with campaign tags in its address, those tags and the domain of the site you came from, never its full address
The same tab id is stored with what you do on the page: what came on screen, which numbers you changed and whether up or down (never what you changed them to), whether you changed one again, which way you first moved the mix of stocks and cash, whether you added or removed a plan, what you opened or pressed, how you answered the page's questions, whether you left an email address (never the address), how long you stayed, and how far down the page you got.
Numbers you type
When you change one of these numbers, the new value is sent to servers the site's developer can access:
- your age, the balance you have invested and its split across tax-deferred, Roth and taxable accounts
- what you save each year
- what you expect to spend each year in retirement
- the age you retire at, and the age the money has to last until
- the mix of stocks and cash
- any cut to spending you set for after a down year
- your yearly pay and the age of your first Social Security contribution, which the Social Security estimate runs on, and a Social Security amount you type in place of the estimate
Each number sent is stored with:
- the site it was typed on
- which plan it belongs to, when you compare more than one
- which version of the page you were shown
- a random id made for that one visit, different from the tab id above and used nowhere else on this site
- the time it was sent
The numbers are not stored with your email address, and nothing stored with them points back to you. So there is no way to find the numbers you typed in order to remove them. If that matters to you, do not use real figures: the picture the site draws is about the numbers rather than about you.
An email address you leave
There is no sign-up and no account. The page offers to email you in a few places and takes one address per visit. If you leave one, it is stored with:
- the site it was left on
- what it was left for
- when it was left
It is used to email you from this site: when the thing you asked about has been built, when a calculator goes live, and when there is something new worth your time. It is not sold, not shared, and not added to any other list. To have it removed, write to info@howmuchtoretire.com from the address you left, and it will be deleted.

If this site starts gathering a kind of data not described here, this page is updated in the same change that does it.
